“Have a Cup…and a Cupcake too”

Paintings by Ernest Stonebraker and ceramics by local artists

Exhibit: October 4 – November 5, 2016

Party:  Saturday, October 29th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Please join us at 6 Bridges Gallery on Saturday, October 29th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm for cupcakes and other light refreshments as we celebrate Have a Cup, an exhibit of still life paintings featuring cups of all sorts by Ernest Stonebraker. The party will be held in conjunction with other ArtsNight Maynard events.

Stonebraker began still life painting when he moved into a first floor studio at ArtSpace Maynard. The studio’s north-facing windows provide a soft, unchanging, natural light ideal for painting.

Stonebraker and his wife Sherry have a modest collection of mugs made in Maine by Edgecomb Potters. Under the soft studio light, the mugs’ varied shapes and crystalline glazes came to life, inspiring Stonebraker to put brush to canvas. When he ran out of cups and mugs to paint, Stonebraker looked for more, searching everywhere from thrift shops and flea markets to the gift shop at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary.

For Stonebraker’s Have a Cup exhibit, he sought to expand the “cup” theme by imagining how other artists such as Munch, Van Gogh and Andrew Wyeth might have handled the subject—even emulating their distinctive styles.

Have a Cup will be complemented by a selection of ceramic cups and mugs made by local artists, on exhibit and for sale throughout the show.

These events are free and open to all.
