Watercolors by Joyce McJilton Dwyer
October 3 – November 11, 2017
Artist Reception: Saturday, October 21, 7:00 – 9:00 pm
6 Bridges Gallery presents Fall Bog, an exhibition of new watercolor paintings by Joyce McJilton Dwyer, from October 3 to November 11, 2017. There will be a reception Saturday, October 21, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm as part of ArtsNight Maynard.
In this solo exhibit, Dwyer explores the Autumn landscape of a special place: Gowing’s Swamp in Concord, Massachusetts. Gowing’s Swamp is a wetland that has been frequented by historians, naturalists, scholars, scientists and students and community members alike for over 150 years. Henry David Thoreau—perhaps it’s most prominent visitor—also felt a connection to Gowing’s Swamp, having provided it’s name and written of it in his journals.
Dwyer has been interested in art, drawing and making things since childhood. It’s been a strong thread throughout her life. Her love of landscape started with growing up on a family farm, where she looked out at the land and crops every day. Her bedroom window was on the second floor, giving her a bird’s eye view of the flat fields sprinkled with woodlots. Each day she looked out that window to get a sense of the day and the weather, witnessing what was happening with the landscape and crops through the seasons.
