Shadows: Silent Markers of Time

Photographs of shadows, taken through the same window over several years, mark the quiet passing of time. The shadows were elegant, simple, and calligraphic, warm with the glow of the sun. Sometimes they turned dark and menacing with the weather, and on the rare morning, the light burned red behind them for brief seconds at sunrise.

With the constancy of sunrise, the shadows seemed to remain the same. The subtle changes became obvious over time: day-to-day with the weather, season-to-season with budding leaves and flowers, year-to-year with growth and the eventual demise of the shrubs. Over time, McClure’s own vision shifted from the literal shadows to the folds and fabric of the curtains, the textured depth, the evocative hint of something else, of drawing with light and dark.
