Please join us Thursday, May 4, 7–9 pm, for an evening of trees. Lynda V. Mapes will be reading from her new book Witness Tree and will be talking about the wonder of trees and how they work. Neil Pederson, a senior ecologist at Harvard Forest, will also be speaking about the memories of old trees and their persistence and resilience. The talks will be set among portraits of trees by photographer Brent Mathison, as part of his latest show The Forest Through the Trees.

Lynda V. Mapes is the environmental reporter for the Seattle Times. She researched and wrote her latest book, Witness Tree, while a Knight Fellow in science journalism at MIT and a Bullard Fellow in forest research in residence with her oak at the Harvard Forest. About Neil Pederson

Neil Pederson is a senior ecologist at the Harvard Forest studying climate-forest dynamics and disturbance ecology. Born and raised in Volney, NY, Neil earned his associate degree at SUNY-Morrisville, his bachelor’s degree at SUNY-ESF, his master’s degree at Auburn University, and his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He has been a forester, professor, and research professor before starting at the Harvard Forest. Neil focuses on the ecology of temperate, mesic forests including those in the eastern US, Spain, the Colchic Temperate Rainforest in Turkey and the Republic of Georgia, and eastern China.

Brent Mathison is a photographer based in Maynard, Massachusetts. He is a firm believer in the importance to our well being of staying connected with nature, and that theme is reflected in his work.
