Enamored of Horses, Barns & Farms by Alice A. Shafer

August 30 – October 1, 2016

Artist Reception: Saturday, September 10, 7:00 – 9:00 pm

6 Bridges Gallery is pleased to present “Enamored of Horses, Barns & Farms” a photography exhibit created by Alice A. Shafer, photographer and digital artist. Shafer is a former Wayland resident who now lives in Acton, MA. The exhibit, which encompasses photography and digital art over several years, will continue from August 30 to October 1, 2016 at 6 Bridges Gallery, 77 Main Street in Maynard. All are invited to the Opening Reception on Saturday, September 10, 7:00–9:00 PM.

Shafer grew up in Minnesota, where her life-long love of horses, barns and farms began. She photographs the iconic beauty of horses and the places where they live. With barns fast disappearing from our landscape, reclaimed barn wood is now found in many luxury homes. Wheat fields and clover fields have become house lots, while backyard horses are as rare as a new Pony Club chapter in New England.

The photographs in Shafer’s exhibit capture aesthetic scenes from nearby Vermont and New Hampshire, from Tennessee, Kentucky and from the countryside of Ireland. Shafer’s images show the beauty of barns in early morning light, the kinship of draft horses, and the special connection between mares with their foals. The exhibit also includes some of Shafer’s image restoration work like a 1965 image of the Olsen Farm in Cushing, Maine, site of the iconic Wyeth painting, “Christina’s World.”
